WSET Level 1 Award in Sake

A beginner level introduction to Sake for those starting a career in the industry or pursuing an interest in Sake.

Qualification Aims

The WSET Level 1 Award in Sake is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of Sake. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to Sake. The qualification will assist those who need a basic familiarity with the main styles and categories of Sake, for example people who work with Sake as part of a larger beverage portfolio, in the retail and hospitality sectors.

Successful candidates will be able to list the principal categories of Sake, and state their defining characteristics, and know the key principles involved in the storage and service of Sake.

By the end of the course you’ll know the principal categories of Sake available, what defines them and what characteristics to expect from them. You’ll have learned how to taste and describe Sake using a globally recognised approach and will know how to serve and store Sake optimally. You'll also be familiar with some important Japanese Sake labelling terms.

What’s Included

The tuition fee is an all-inclusive fee with no additional costs to pay. It covers all course materials, textbooks, Sake tasting samples, examination fees as well as several delicious snacks to assist with the Sake and food pairing sessions.

Tasting Samples

Over the course of the class, eight Sakes will be tasted, several with some exciting paired snacks to enhance the experience.

Assessment

The WSET Level 1 Award in Sake is completed within a single day, lasting a total of 7 hrs & 30 mins:

  • Tuition: 5 hrs & 15 mins

  • Exam: 45 mins

  • Breaks: 90 mins (total)

The WSET Level 1 Award in Sake is assessed by a closed-book examination that consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, to be completed in 45 minutes. A candidate is required to pass with a minimum mark of 70%. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

Prior Knowledge

There are no restrictions on entry to the WSET Level 1 Award in Sake however you must be aged 18 or above.

Preparation Needed

There is no need to prepare anything before starting your Level 1 Award in Sake course.

However, anyone embarking on a WSET qualification should familiarise themselves with the qualification specification. This document will help you understand what to expect and what you will get out of the course.

Language

All courses will be taught in English. Exams will also be in English only.

Class Size

To keep things personal but also to allow for discussion and group work, class size is kept to a maximum of 14 students.

Location

Courses will take place in Prosperity Millennia Plaza, Quarry Bay, in a facility with very convenient MTR, bus and tram links. Full details will be sent to all students once registered.

Cost

The all-inclusive cost for WSET Level 1 Award in Sake is HKD 2,250.
